John Bercow, the previous British House of Commons speaker, claims Brexit is a historic blunder and the region need to not be sure by the close 2016 vote to depart the European Union.

Bercow retired last week after a decade as speaker that saw him become a central player in Britain's Brexit drama.

Speaker of the Residence of Commons, John Bercow, poses for a photo on Westminster Bridge in London Thursday Oct. 31, 2019. "The foreign policy mistakes of the post-war period are my honest views". I respect Boris Johnson but Brexit doesn't help us.

"It's better to be part of the [EU] power bloc".

Giving away one of the worst kept "secrets" in parliament, Mr Bercow confirmed what most politicians believed to be his stance on the issue by saying the United Kingdom would be better off staying in the EU.

The 56-year-old played an instrumental role in Britain's failure to exit the European Union on October 31 after allowing MPs to put forward a motion preventing the United Kingdom from leaving the EU without a withdrawal agreement.

Mr Bercow - who was a Conservative MP before being elected to the Speaker role in 2009 - was often sharply criticised by members of his former party for his decisions regarding Brexit debates in the Commons.

He, however, rejected the idea he had blocked Brexit, insisting "it was Parliament" that had prevented Britain from leaving before now, "not me".

On Monday, 62-year-old Sir Lindsay Hoyle was elected as Mr Bercow's successor.

In the wide-ranging interview Mr Bercow defended his actions and said he was "championing the rights of Parliament". Bercow earlier disclosed he will not run in the election in December.

Sir Lindsay defeated former Labour colleague Chris Bryant in the final round by 325 votes to 213.
