Why You Should Install The October 2019 Android Security Update ASAP

GMS Launch Approval Window for Android Exploited Android 0day linked to notorious spyware vendor
Emmett Howard | 08 October, 2019, 14:11

It is most likely the last monthly Android security update for the original Google Pixel and Pixel XL as the official support period for both smartphones is ending this month as per the Google support website.

While it's unlikely average Android users will be targeted by whoever is exploiting the bug, it's severe enough that everyone should install the October 2019 security update once it's available on their specific device, and those using any of the smartphones listed above should take extra care in the meantime. The latest thing that must be fixed is "zero-day"- an unpatched vulnerability in Android that is now attacking in the real world. What it does is help a hacker gain root access to a phone.

Another similar Android vulnerability had been discovered back in 2017 that appears to have caught onto the newer software versions.

Android 10 was launched in early September and Google has just confirmed that all phones launched after January 31, 2020 must have the new OS.

This particular vulnerability is strong in the sense that it only "requires little or no per-device customization" as per Google.

Popular recent devices such as Samsung Galaxy 7, 8, 9, Huawei P20, Xiaomi Redmi A1, 5A and Note 5, Motorola Z3, Oppo A3 and Oreal LG phones are believed to be vulnerable to exploit, based on Project Zero's source code review.

Google's Project Zero team has revealed information about a zero-day Android exploit, the active use of which is being attributed to the NSO group, though representatives from NSO have denied the use of the same to ArsTechnica. However, the fix did not make its way into Android security updates, leaving several devices vulnerable to this flaw that is now being tracked as CVE-2019-2215.

Google's Project Zero team has been looking into this issue. It's been tracking the bug and is hoping it's fixed soon.

"This issue is rated as high severity on Android and by itself requires installation of a malicious application for potential exploitation".
