Longtime FOX News anchor Shepard Smith announced on Friday he is leaving the network. He only said that he asked to leave the network and that he would not be going to another news network, at least for a while.

Shepard Smith is leaving Fox News.

Smith, along with anchors Chris Wallace, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, is one of the key symbols of the network's commitment to journalism, balancing out the network's opinion wing, which includes hosts like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson.

"Watching Fake News CNN is better than watching Shepard Smith, the lowest rated show on @FoxNews", Trump tweeted in August. In what could be seen as a veiled reference to Trump's attacks, Smith said he aimed to "speak truth to power, without fear or favor, in context and with perspective".

While Smith stated he would not be reporting for other news agencies in the "near future", that didn't stop scores of netizens from wondering aloud where he might land next.

Smith has displayed his affection for Fox News in interviews and on-air.
