Samsung: Galaxy S10 Could Be Unlocked With Anyone's Fingerprint

Samsung: Galaxy S10 Could Be Unlocked With Anyone's Fingerprint Samsung will fix the bug that lets unregistered fingerprints unlock the Galaxy S10 - GSMArena.com news
Emmett Howard | 18 October, 2019, 04:42

This time the culprit is the Galaxy S10 and its ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint reader, which apparently can be unlocked by anyone as long as there is a screen protector or some other piece of transparent plastic between a finger and the sensor.

"Samsung Electronics is aware of the case of the S10's malfunctioning fingerprint recognition and will soon issue a software patch", the company told Reuters in a statement.

Since earlier this month, similar allegations have been made from users around the world, including in South Korea where people demonstrated silicon screen protectors being used to bypass the fingerprint reader. However, the same type of ultrasonic sensor is fitted to the Note 10.

The Galaxy S10 should be free of bugs by this point, but Samsung has admitted that a pretty big one is still out there. The precise cause of the problem remains unclear.

Korean media is reporting today that Samsung has ordered the production of said display packages, dubbed HIAA2 (for hole-in-active-area). The country's online bank, Kakao Bank, also advised users to not use the feature until it is fixed.

We are very curious to see whether Samsung has managed to solve the photo quality problems inherent with the under-display camera technologies, but if anyone can make transparent OLED work, it's the Korean juggernaut.

Matthew Miller drove eight hours to get his hands on the future. Most phones use optical in-screen fingerprint readers, which place a CMOS chip under the display and take a 2D picture of your finger.

The display ratio from the test results means that if this is the S11, that it would be taller than the Galaxy S10, which hopefully means a larger total screen size and hopefully a higher resolution, too.
