Medvedev reaches sixth consecutive final at Shanghai Masters

Stefanos Tsitsipas celebrates Victory marked the biggest match win of Tsitsipas career

Medvedev, the world number four, is set to face Alexander Zverev in tomorrow's final after the German overcame Matteo Berrettini of Italy at the Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 tournament at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

The confident Russian, through to his ninth final of the year, outlasted sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 7-6 (5), 7-5.

If he can top Zverev in China, it will be his third win of those six championship matches. He has a record of 28-3 over that span.

Roger Federer predicted earlier this week that it would be hard for the Big Three (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and himself) to keep dominating at the Grand Slams next year, as the next generation of players are now "playing with the big boys, and being really able to challenge and beat us".

"I think be more aggressive because once you get aggressive and they see that you're really going for it, I might even say they get scared", he said.

Medvedev has now reached a tour-leading nine finals in 2019.

Djokovic - who won the Japan Open last week - has never previously failed to make the semi-finals in Shanghai.

The Russian served for the match at 5-4, only for Tsitsipas to dig in and break for 5-5, before Medvedev did likewise.

Medvedev then claimed a close tie-break when Tsitsipas sent a backhand off target, with only one point coming against serve. The 38-year-old Swiss served an ace to force a third set, during which he was penalised in the fourth game for twice hitting the ball out the court in anger.

Tsitsipas said: "I don't know if I'm going to be able to beat him the next time or the time after that one, but I know there's going to be a time where I'm going to find opportunities and beat him".

"The most important thing is to keep it going as long as I can".

Zverev boosted his hopes of reaching the ATP Finals by reaching his first championship match since May and a first Masters final of 2019.

The victory helped Zverev climb to seventh with 2,855 points in the race, 330 points more than eighth-placed Berrettini. The 22-year-old Zverev, however, quickly rebounded, breaking Federer and jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set.

"He's been playing some unbelievable tennis in the last few months".
