To the Put up, she had stated earlier than final week's arrest that she deliberate to protest this identical method for the subsequent 13 Fridays.

Being arrested at age 81 poses its own, new challenges, Fonda told The Associated Press in an interview, a couple of hours ahead of the second in what Fonda says will be her weekly Friday arrests to advocate for urgent action to slow climate change.

"What would you tell President Trump?" someone in the crowd yelled to her earlier, as she and other protesters stood on their platform in front of the Capitol. With fellow actor Sam Waterston, she was one of 17 climate protesters - many of them white and gray haired - arrested for alleged unlawful demonstration Friday by what Fonda called "extremely nice and professional" Capitol police.

Fonda had announced her intentions two protest weeks ago, telling the Washington Post she recently moved to D.C.so she could be more active on the issue of climate change.

Sam Waterston is handcuffed and detained by Capitol Police during the "Fire Drill Fridays" protest outside the Library of Congress in Washington, Oct. 18, 2019. Celebrities, scientists, economists and people from impacted communities will join her for "Fire Drill Friday" each week.

When asked by a reporter what drove her and others to go onto those steps and be arrested, she said: "Well, because it brings people like you here. It attracts media. We're trying to raise the visibility of this crisis".

"I'm going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the [television] series and I'm going to go to D.C. and I'm going to have a rally every Friday", she said.

But this time, Fonda had managed to get her hands cuffed in front of her, for balance. She's vowed to demonstrate outside the Capitol every Friday.

"I've been deeply inspired by the student climate strikers, " Fonda said in a recent video. "It so traumatized her that she stopped speaking and eating".

Leslie Wharton, 63, from Bethesda, Maryland, sat out the Vietnam War protests that drew out Fonda.

Lots of people of all ages are anxious about climate change and want to do something, Wharton said, but "us elders are retired or part-time".
