"Over and above the National AIDS Trust Fund (NATF), my Government is developing a robust National Health Insurance Scheme and stepping up innovative domestic funding initiatives such as the traditional AIDS levy and the new Health Levy, to enable us to focus on the sustainability of our response", he said.

Established in 2002, the Global Fund raised 12.9 billion USA dollars from worldwide donors during its previous conference held in Canada in 2016.

Dr Tedros added: "The replenishment of the Global Fund is not just an investment in one organization or three diseases; it's an investment in our shared vision of a healthier, safer and fairer world".

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has officially opened the conference being attended by several Heads of State and governments.

He also thanked the Global Fund for having contributed 1.2 billion dollars towards Zambia's fight against the three diseases.

Most of that $14 billion is destined for the African continent, where millions of people have died from these epidemics.

Britain, Germany, Canada and the European Union increased their pledges, too, while private donors pledged more than $ 1 billion.

"I welcome the commitment made by so many donors under the auspices of France to fully finance the Global Fund for the next three-year period".

President Macron chronicled the success stories of the Global Fund 17 years later since the Fund was setup.

Global Fund Result Report 2019 shows that since 2002, health programs supported by the Global Fund partnership have saved 32 million lives as of the end of 2018. He acknowledged the critical role of the Global Fund in Zimbabwe's flight against HIV, TB and Malaria.

"AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria: there are lives behind these words, young people who aspire to live a normal life, to fall in love with whoever they want, to have a job, to study". Out of the total funding, US$426 million is earmarked on ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.
