The White Home stated al-Asiri was additionally chargeable for a disrupted printer cartridge bomb plot in 2010 that sought to explode a cargo airplane over the jap US.

The Associated Press reported in 2018 that al-Siri and several associates had been killed in a USA drone attack in the governante of Marib in eastern Yemen, citing tribal leaders and al-Qaeda-linked sources.

President Trump on Thursday confirmed for the first time that Ibrahim al-Asiri, a senior al Qaeda bomb maker tied to the Christmas Day "underwear" plot from a decade ago, was killed in 2017 during a counterterrorism operation in Yemen.

It did not say why Trump is confirming al-Asiri's death now.

Trump's statement provided no details on the operation in which he was killed.

"The United States will continue to hunt down terrorists like al-Asiri until they no longer pose a threat to our great Nation", Trump said in a statement.

Al-Asiri created a more refined underwear bomb for a foiled attempt to target another airline in 2012, according to the White House.

Al-Asiri is believed to have masterminded the attempted Christmas Day, 2009, bombing of a passenger jet flying from Amsterdam to Detroit.

His specialty was making bombs that were small enough to get past security at airports.

Abdulmutallab, a native of Nigeria, pleaded guilty to eight charges filed against him and was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences, plus 50 years in prison.

Al-Asiri was born in 1982 in Saudi Arabia to a military family and has been accused of recruiting his younger brother, Abdulla, as a suicide bomber for a failed 2009 attack on Prince Mohammed bin Nayef of Saudi Arabia.
