The body of Zimbabwe's ex-president Robert Mugabe was flown out of Singapore on Wednesday following his death last week, his nephew said, heading home for burial in a country bitterly divided by the hero-turned-despot's legacy.

There have been disagreements between the Mugabe family and the government over Mugabe's burial with the former advocating for him to be buried at his rural homestead in Zvimba.

The body is expected to arrive in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, adding time pressure to Mnangagwa, who is under fire over an economic crisis and clampdown on dissent that has drawn parallels with the worst excesses of the Mugabe era.

On Thursday and Friday, Mugabe's body will lie in state at Rufaro Stadium in the capital so the public can pay their respects.

According to the letter from the foreign ministry, "Heads of State/government wishing to attend the ceremony are advised to arrive in Harare on Friday, September 13, 2019... and depart immediately after the ceremony taking into consideration that government authorities will be fully occupied with preparations for the burial service/ceremony reserved for Sunday, September 15, 2019". In private, they say the feud with Mugabe's family could have been handled better.

Mugabe's family is pushing back against the government's plan to bury him at the National Heroes Acre monument in the Zimbabwe capital Harare and wants him to be interred in his home village, relatives have told Reuters.

Mr Mugabe, 95, a controversial leader who ruled his country for nearly 40 years, will lie in state at two different locations in the capital of Harare.

Mugabe's family is at loggerheads with the Zimbabwean government over where he should be buried.

The influential war veterans, who broke with Mugabe in 2016 and played a key role in bringing Mnangagwa to power, think it would be an affront to the liberation movement if Mugabe is not buried at the shrine. The mood at the service was "sombre, everybody is sad", said Molai.
