Among the public as a whole the two sides are nearly reversed, with 50% of Britons preferring Johnson to abide by the law compared to 28% who would want him to break it.

"So a general election is coming".

Labour claims it will vote to allow Prime Minister Boris Johnson to bring about an election when he has delayed the October 31 Brexit deadline.

Only 28% put the law before the Brexit deadline, while the remaining 21% said they didn't know what he should do.

Mr Corbyn threatened to "unleash the biggest people-powered campaign we've ever seen", when addressing union members.

"Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will deliver Brexit by 31 October, no ifs or buts, so we can move on and focus on the issues that matter to people", said its party chair James Cleverly.

At a conference of union barons, the Labour leader insisted his party was "ready" and vowed to campaign for a second referendum.

He claimed Johnson's government is not serious about trying to get a Brexit deal with the EU.

He accused Mr Johnson of "hijacking the referendum result to shift even more power and wealth to those at the top", as he painted the Tory leader and his Cabinet as "the establishment".

Amber Rudd should never have joined a Government with which she disagreed
Nigel Farage has argued that the Brexit Party should be granted an electoral pact by the Conservatives to contest Labour seats. He told Sky News's Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "I'm really sorry to see Amber step down, I like her, I respect her".

"The policy is clear - if it is a bad Tory deal then Labour will formally back remain".

Mr Mann, who is set to take up a full-time post as the Government's anti-Semitism tsar, said: "Every Labour MP, every Labour activist in the North and the Midlands, knocking on doors listening to the voters, is hearing what is going on".

Mr Watson and other senior Labour figures, including Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer, say they will campaign to stay in the European Union in any circumstances.

"Prime minister: you can hide from parliament for a few weeks, but when we return we will be ready", Starmer will say.

Watson's intervention is likely to be viewed as less than helpful by the Labour leadership. "And I think that's unbelievable, that decent people who have devoted their entire lives to mainstream politics are being driven out by this culture of extremism and in some cases, anti-semitism.I have to be honest and the truth is that I have become ashamed of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn". This speech does not reflect Labour policy in any way.

By contrast to Watson's claim, party strategists believe the most ardent remain voters will be all but impossible to win back - but hope they can offer a pragmatic way out of the current crisis for both leavers and remainers.

Ian Austin, who resigned the whip earlier this year, launched an attack on Corbyn in a debate requested by the Labour leader on the rule of law.

He also accused the PM of cosying up to President Donald Trump to get a "one-sided" trade deal with the USA which would damage employment rights, the NHS and United Kingdom industry.

These included continued customs union membership until the question of whether to leave could be settled at a general election; and closer alignment with the EU on workers' rights and environmental standards.
