Thousands of workers begin strike at Spring Hill GM plant

UAW Votes For Nationwide Strike To Begin Before Midnight Sunday The Latest: UAW says 49K members at GM plants will strike

"We need to bring up all American workers", said Earl.

While the details of the product are still a secret, an individual familiar with the matter told CNN that GM's offer specifically pointed to the allocation of an upcoming electric truck to Detroit-Hamtramck and its battery production to Lordstown.

More than 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers walked off General Motors factory floors or set up picket lines early Monday as contract talks with the company deteriorated into a strike.

The strikes are estimated to cost GM $250 million a day. "It's ten percent lower than previous year but we've got a pipeline that's still full and I do expect to go ahead and get these vehicles that are already built", he added.

The union's 46,000 hourly workers walked out at 31 GM factories and 21 other facilities, spread across nine states, mostly in the center of the country.

Local union leaders met in Detroit 'and opted to strike at midnight on Sunday, ' the UAW said on its Twitter account. It also promised a "solution" for two of the four plants now slated for closure: one in Detroit and another in Lordstown, Ohio.

GM's statement regarding the stalled labor negotiations indicated that the company had promised the UAW to offer "solutions" for workers impacted by these plant closures, but did not indicate what those solutions were.

The University of British Columbia is closest to the University of Toronto, coming in at number 34. This year Swinburne has improved its position in a number of globally recognised rankings.

Contract talks were scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. EDT on Monday. GM was picked because it's the most profitable of the three, and because its plans to close four US factories have angered union members.

On Friday, the UAW announced temporary contract extensions with Ford Motor Co and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) while it focused its attention on GM. The strike vote passed by almost 98 percent.

A source close to the UAW with direct knowledge of negotiations said most of the proposals the company disclosed publicly on Sunday came very late in negotiations Saturday.

GM has factories in Michigan, Ohio, New York, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Indiana and Kansas.

It was the need to save money for those efforts that GM halted operations at three U.S. plants - including the assembly line in Lordstown, and announced plans to shut the Hamtramck plant, its last Detroit factory, early next year.

Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labor and economics at the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research (CAR), said the strike at GM's US facilities will also shut its plants in Canada and Mexico as the automaker's supply chain is so integrated.

The AP said analysts at Cox Automotive believe GM has enough vehicles on dealer lots to last about 77 days at the current sales pace - well above the industry average of 61.
