Saudi Arabia curtails half of its crude oil production after drone attack

Iran dismisses U.S. claim it was behind Saudi oil attacks, says ready for war US ´locked and loaded´ after Saudi attacks as oil prices surge

Saudi Arabia's national oil company, Aramco, said it will cut oil production by about 5.7 million barrels per day, or almost 50 percent, after drones hit the kingdom's oil production, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Aramco gave no timeline for output resumption.

According to the pro-Houthi Saba news agency, "intelligence cooperation from honorable people inside Saudi Arabia" enabled the surprise attack.

Mr Trump said on Twitter that the USA was waiting to hear from the Saudis as to who they believe was behind the attack and "under what terms we would proceed!"

The US has blamed Iran for the attack on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia while it has ruled out possibility of Yemeni involvement.

Oil-rich Kuwait also said it would increase security around the country's "vital sites" over the attacks.

Trump also is apparently trying to ward off concerns by tweeting "PLENTY OF OIL!".

Pompeo claimed later that there was no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.

On Saturday afternoon, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, discussing the attacks and Saudi Arabia's self-defense, according to the White House.

The price of oil surged on Monday, following an attack on Saudi Arabian facilities that has ratcheted up tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The U.S has previously accused Iran's hand in the attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf in June although Tehran rejected them as "wild allegations".

Saudi's energy minister said Saturday officials are "working to recover the lost quantities" of oil and will update the public within two days.

The country's total production hovers around 10 million barrels per day, with an average of 9.85 million barrels per day in August, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show. And so to have this sort of brazen strike on these oil installations is going to be a challenge for Saudi Aramco and the Saudi government. "Even if exports resume in the next 24 to 48 hours, the image of invulnerability has been altered", Helima Croft, global head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, told Reuters.

That led to the interruption of an estimated 5.7 million barrels in crude supplies, authorities said while pledging the kingdom's stockpiles would make up the difference.

This adds up to five percent of the world's daily oil supply and there is a fear of a hike in prices amid shortage of the hydro carbon.

Despite the USA accusation, the White House said on Sunday Trump may still meet his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani at the upcoming United Nations assembly.

Smoke from a fire at the Abqaiq oil processing facility fills the skyline, in Buqyaq, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.

But Trump appeared on Sunday to play down the chances he might be willing to meet with Iranian officials, saying reports he would do so without conditions were not accurate.

The Huthis have staged repeated cross-border missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi air bases and other facilities in what they say is retaliation for the Riyadh-led bombing campaign on rebel-held areas in Yemen. President Trump has said he's open to meeting with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani.
