Republicans have no idea what Trump wants them to do on guns

Congressional Democrats vow to prioritize gun legislation Bipartisan US senators waiting on decision from Trump on gun control

A bipartisan group of USA senators yesterday said they would try to revive a failed 2013 bill to close loopholes on the law requiring gun sale background checks, but were awaiting word on whether President Donald Trump will support their effort.

Democratic lawmakers have been urging a vote on a gun control proposal, pointing specifically to the universal background check bill that already passed the House.

U.S. Democrats in Congress, looking to heighten their profile on the hot-button issue of gun control, moved forward on Tuesday with new measures aimed at curbing gun violence, after President Donald Trump huddled with Republican leaders.

"We're going to take a look at a lot of different things, ' he said".

"They may not support what we are trying to accomplish, which is background checks on commercial sales, because they want to go much further and confiscate people's firearms", said Toomey.

Nonetheless they depicted the president as engaged and encouraging, with Toomey saying Trump had a sturdy "ardour in doing something meaningful" to stop gun violence, even though he has now not endorsed any particular manner.

At one point, Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath of Georgia, who lost her son to gun violence, said, "I know the pain of losing a child to gun violence ... for every single day that we fall into not taking action, mothers and fathers across this country will live through the same nightmare that I did".

The White House threatened to veto that bill and Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, returned from a meeting with Trump on Tuesday telling reporters "We're not going there", when asked about the House-passed bill. He said the positives of gun ownership are usually overlooked, citing examples of people who have used AR-15 rifles in self-defense. With Congress back in session this week, Republicans and Democrats have been pointing fingers, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accusing Democrats of engaging in "theatrics", and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warning that "people are dying" while Senate Republicans refuse to act.

The bipartisan Toomey-Manchin legislation failed to pass the Senate in 2013, and many Republicans continue to oppose the idea as an infringement on gun rights.

"This is the kind of thing where you might actually have to have a vote to find out where the votes are", Toomey said.

Manchin and Toomey teamed up six years ago with a gun background check bill.

In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, 89 percent support background checks for all gun purchases, including private and gun show sales; and 86 percent back "red flag" laws allowing the police to take guns from individuals found by a judge to be a danger.

Trump said conversations would continue Wednesday night and into Thursday, and the senators said they hoped to hear back from the White House then.
