Protesters Ask US for Help in Red, White and Blue Rally

Hong Kong school students form human chain Hong Kong protests to target airport after night of violence

A US Consulate representative, left, receives a letter from protesters as people march from Charter Garden to the US consulate in Hong Kong.

A judge said Wong is now free to travel to Germany, and then afterwards to the United States.

Speaking at a media-sponsored human rights event at the German parliament, one of the most prominent faces of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement likened ongoing protests to the role of Berlin during the Cold War.

Police public relations chief Tse Chun-chung said Monday that police are investigating the case.

Late Friday, police fired volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets while protesters set off street fires, smashed traffic lights and vandalized three subway stations.

Protesters urged the US Congress to quickly pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act when it reconvenes this week.

"The pro-Beijing leadership in Hong Kong must ensure a political system accountable to the people, including granting universal suffrage and investigating police violence", Pelosi said.

Members of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China reintroduced the bill in June, days after a million people marched calling for the extradition legislation to be scrapped.

Hong Kong can not be ignored. If passed, Congress would reevaluate trade and business privileges for Hong Kong and China on a yearly basis.

"The United States continues to monitor events in Hong Kong", said a senior USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Beijing will not give in to the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and will not change its policy because of the U.S. government's political preference, the Global Times said in an editorial published on Monday.

An opinion article in the Global Times-often used to express the more nationalistic and belligerent sentiment within the Communist Party-said the demonstrations were being driven by extremists undergoing a "fit of hysteria, announcing that should their demands not be met, they would rather destroy everything". He wore a red "Make America Great Again" hat.

India's moon mission in peril as spacecraft goes silent
Both Vikram and the Pragyan rover had a design lifetime of one lunar daytime, equivalent to around 14 Earth days. Chandrayaan-2, which cost about $140m (£114m), far less than other missions, is an entirely indigenous project.

Hong Kong singer and actress Deanie Ip was among the march participants. Chinese workers confront the same attacks on democratic and social rights by the CCP regime in Beijing, but are overwhelmingly hostile to the U.S. which is mounting a trade war and threatening all-out war against China.

Swastikas with the term "Chinazi" were spray-painted in the Central district.

The withdrawal of the bill was one of five demands made by protesters.

Her move to withdraw the bill "was a public relations exercise vis-a-vis Beijing and Washington", said Andreas Fulda, a senior fellow at the University of Nottingham's Asia Research Institute and author of a book on efforts at democratization in China. "Carrie Lam has every reason to be anxious about a strong US response" when Congress sits again, he said. The United States is now locked in trade negotiations with China, and it's possible Trump Administration officials feel taking a hard line on the Hong Kong protests could imperil talks and force a trade war. Bystanders jeered, yelling "shame", and cheered when a group of tactical officers left the area. The students formed human chains in districts across Hong Kong.

It is unclear how long the protests will last.

Officers at Sheung Shui Police Station opened their catered meal boxes to find the uncooked meat, the South China Morning Post reported.

Research by academics has shown that half of those on the streets are between 20 and 30 years old, while 77 percent have degrees.

U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) voiced his support for the protesters via Twitter on September 8, saying, "The people of Hong Kong have been clear in their demands and their voices are being heard".

Hong Kong's separate customs territory status is not a gift given by the USA but it has a nature of mutual benefit, the editorial said, adding that U.S. political elites have no right to define Hong Kong's one country two systems principle.

The unrest has become the biggest challenge to Beijing's rule since it took over Hong Kong, and is an embarrassment to its ruling Communist Party ahead of October 1 celebrations of its 70th year in power.

The Foreign Correspondents Club of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Journalists Association both issued statements condemning the increasing acts of violence against journalists.
