Hurricane Dorian: Number of missing drops to 1,300

Tropical storm warnings have been declared for the Bahamas, which was just battered by Hurricane Dorian, evidence of strengthening in a system that forecasters say is moving towards Florida or the Gulf of Mexico.

With 1,300 people still missing, heavy rains and strong winds could make search-and-rescue efforts more hard.

Humberto is moving away from the Bahamas and is now about 135 miles north of Great Abaco Island and 175 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

At least 50 people are known to have been killed.

People wait in Marsh Harbor Port to be evacuated to Nassau, in Abaco, Bahamas, on September 6, 2019.

"We're seeing plastic tarps go out all over the islands, and that's extremely important because now you've got another tropical storm coming", said Ken Isaacs, vice president of programs for USA relief organization Samaritan's Purse. The storm is about 320 miles (515 kilometers) southeast of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.

The storm formed almost two weeks after Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas as a devastating Category 5 storm.

"I pay no attention to 50", Ingraham said after touring hurricane-ravaged Abaco Island. Portions of the coasts of Florida and Georgia will see 1 to 2 inches of rain.

"And I don't make wild statements", he said.

Tropical Storm Humberto strengthened from a tropical cyclone after forming just east of the Caribbean nation on Friday.

Kwasi Thompson, minister of state for Grand Bahama, warned Humberto will affect the entire island and urged people to seek shelter.

"The weather system will slow down logistics", said Carl Smith, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency.

Dave McGregor, president and COO of the Grand Bahama Power Company, said crews would resume restoring power as soon as possible. Until a low-level center forms for the storm, forecast models will struggle with it, he said.

"We are back in storm preparation mode again, unfortunately", he said.

The tropical cyclone was not expected to bring anywhere near that level of devastation. In a nation where 80% of the land is less than 32 feet (10 meters) above sea level, people were confronted by "20 feet of ocean in their backyard", Sands said.

"We have always had many hurricanes, but now they are more intense, and they are more frequent", he said.
