Dorian had been spiraling wind speeds as fast as 185 miles per hour, with devastating gusts over 220 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center warned Sunday.

Dorian tracked directly over Marsh Harbour in Great Abaco in the northwestern Bahamas earlier Sunday afternoon. "Dorian will slow to a crawl and may not emerge from the Bahamas until sometime Tuesday when it begins to move more to the north".

With gusts over 355kmh, Dorian was moving west at 11kmh.

The farther offshore Hurricane Dorian tracks, the less amount of rain and wind damage will occur.

"We can't make everybody happy but we believe we can keep everyone alive", McMaster said.

Julia Eaddy, 70, in Titusville, Florida, said she and her husband had ridden out several hurricanes before and were not fazed by the forecast. Dozens ignored evacuation orders, officials said.

"The end could be fatal", Assistant Police Commissioner Samuel Butler told AP. "We ask you, we beg you, we plead with you to get to a place of safety".

Residents on Abaco posted video on social media showing floodwaters halfway up the sides of single-family homes with parts of the roofs torn off. auto alarms blared across the island, which was littered with twisted metal and splintered wood.

"Be prepared. This is a hurricane and as the president said we've not seen such power in a hurricane". As the Hurricane Center writes: "Residents in these areas should continue to monitor the progress of Dorian".

However, effects from this major hurricane will be damaging all along the Florida coast, heading past Georgia and the Carolinas. Most came from Sweetings Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred about 1.5m above sea level. "We are deep in the error cone". "The price you may pay for not evacuating is your life".

Meanwhile, Klotzbach, the hurricane researcher, warned of Dorian's catastrophic strength: "Abaco is going to get wiped".

Hurricane Dorian tore across the Bahamas on Sunday as a historically powerful hurricane, officials said, leaving scenes of devastation in its path. "I can only say to them, that I hope this is not the last time they will hear my voice and may God be with them", he said. "However, you prepare for the worst nonetheless", he said.

The archipelago is no stranger to hurricanes.

How fast are the winds within the hurricane?

Millions of residents on the East Coast are watching to see if the storm will turn north in the next two days and spare the state with a direct hit. The hurricane will move dangerously close to the Florida east coast late Monday through Tuesday night. The same area was put under a storm surge watch.

A hurricane watch, which means the storm is possible, was also issued for Volusia County.

"Heavy rains, capable of producing life-threatening flash floods, are expected over northern portions of the Bahamas and coastal sections of the southeast and lower mid-Atlantic regions of the United States through late this week", National Hurricane Center forecasters wrote Sunday.

The governor's office also said that tolls would be lifted in relevant areas to speed traffic if and when evacuations are ordered.

Zone A includes mobile homes, sub-standard housing and low-lying areas prone to water intrusion.

Even while the majority of computer models predict that Dorian will remain just off the Florida coast, the National Hurricane Center is urging residents not to let their guard down and to continue preparing for an "extremely dangerous" hurricane and that landfall can still not be ruled out. Everyone there should take immediate shelter and not venture into the eye.

"It is emphasized that although the official track forecast does not show landfall, users should not focus on the exact track".

Dorian is moving to the west at 7 miles per hour and is expected to strike Grand Bahama, the northernmost island in the archipelago, late Sunday or early Monday, forecasters said.

The storm was growing, meteorologists said, with hurricane-force winds extending 45 miles from its eye. That makes forecasting its path delicate and hard.

US President Donald Trump speaks during a briefing about Hurricane Dorian at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) yesterday in Washington. - Mandatory evacuations are now in place in parts of Palm Beach County, and emergency officials have opened up almost a dozen shelters. "But it can change its course again and it can go back more toward Florida". These courageous professionals fly a plane into the hurricane to gather data to help with forecasting the storm. Other counties announced voluntary evacuations.
