At one point, the storm was moving as slow as one mile per hour, dumping rain on the islands and blasting them with high winds while refusing to move on.

The exact toll of the devastation in the Bahamas will not be clear until the storm passes and rescue crews can get on the ground.

Hurricane Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour, but southeastern US states are still expecting risky weather.

Dorian was expected to hit Florida with hurricane conditions overnight, before bringing its powerful winds and unsafe surf along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina by late Thursday.

It pounded the northern islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama with winds up to 295 kilometres per hour and torrential rain before finally moving into open waters on Tuesday (local time) on a course for the USA state of Florida. While the threat of a direct hit on Florida had all but evaporated, Dorian was expected to pass dangerously close to Georgia and SC - and perhaps strike North Carolina - on Thursday or Friday.

The storm was causing havoc for travellers on Florida's east coast, where some airports and petrol stations were closed.

It said on Twitter that reopening would depend on the progress of the storm.

At the time, the storm had been stalled over Grand Bahama Island and its neighbors for a full day.

The US Coast Guard airlifted at least 21 people injured on Abaco. The airport on Grand Bahama was on Tuesday said to be under 6ft (1.8m) of water.
