Drew Brees' injury fears grow: 'Significant' worry, surgery a possibility

Brees knew Sunday night that he needed surgery for ligament damage, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The timeframe depends on the surgery, but he's likely out 6 weeks.

Head coach Sean Payton said on a conference call Monday afternoon from the Seattle area that Brees was seeking a second opinion and the Saints had no news to report on his status.

Payton added that Brees is having surgery Wednesday and the team will continue to monitor the situation.

Prior to the weekend, Sam Darnold was ruled out indefinitely with mono and Cam Newton looked stunningly mortal as Carolina time and again eschewed using the NFL's best short-yardage weapon over the past decade in falling to 0-2.

"It is going to be a hard film to watch for guys", Payton said.

The Saints have not indicated whether they will consider placing Brees on injured reserve, which would free up a roster spot but would require the quarterback to miss at least eight weeks.

Minus injured quarterback Drew Brees, receiver Michael Thomas and the New Orleans Saints are 4.5-point underdogs at Seattle in Week 3 of the National Football League season.

Brees left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams in the first quarter after the thumb on his right hand hit the hand of on-rushing Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald on the follow through of a throw. He was seen struggling to pick up a ball, and then had the thumb taped. "For me, I didn't suffer many major injuries, but I suffered a whole bunch to my hand". As long as Bridgewater can keep the Saints around.500, they should be in contention to win the division and host a home playoff game in January. A steady dose of outside runs by RB Todd Gurley got Los Angeles all the way down to the New Orleans 4-yard line, but similar to the opening series they failed to punch it into the endzone.

After Brees went out during the first quarter of the Saints' 27-9 loss to the Rams on Sunday, Bridgewater went in and finished the game at quarterback.

In his career, Brees has missed only three games and one to injury in 13 seasons.

"I was looking forward to playing him, " Wagner said.

On the Seahawks' end, they've spent the week preparing for both quarterbacks. So the Saints might as well play to their strengths without Brees.

I certainly don't want this post to sound like I am happy that players on other teams are getting hurt. Without Brees in the lineup, the way a Bears-Saints showdown is viewed changes significantly.

Although Hill was the the Saints' third-string quarterback when the season started, he was on the field way more than your typical third-string quarterback, and that's because Payton basically used him as his own Swiss Army knife.

"I felt real confident in Teddy - and do feel confident".
