Bugatti is a "production auto manufacturer", meaning it makes multiple copies of the same vehicle for use on public roads albeit, in Bugatti's case, in low numbers and at very high prices.
A specially prepared prototype version of the Bugatti Chiron set a jaw-dropping new record of 304.773 miles per hour at parent company Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien testing ground on Sunday.
This is impressive, the record was set on the 2nd of August and there have been a number of modifications to the Chiron to help it achieve this.
Michelin played an integral role in the Chiron's top speed run.
The first is a technicality. The Regera RS was the previous record holder, claiming a two-run average of 277.87 miles per hour. Koenigsegg has a tendency to not take these things lying down. "It's to get everything together and working in one auto".
This Chiron is 10 inches longer than the normal road auto. Bugatti also ditched the airbrake and streamlined the rear deck to improve aerodynamic efficiency, redesigning the exhaust system and diffuser in the process. Lastly, the suspension system was revised to lower the Chiron and manage the ride height for optimum drag reduction. For power, Bugatti has fitted an updated version of the characteristic eight-liter W16 engine. Bugatti installed a safety seat for the driver and a full roll cage, while some weight-saving measures were implemented as well.
Ultimately it renders the 300mph Chiron a bit of a one-off. Chances are that some of what Bugatti has done to this auto will make it into a full production model before too long - perhaps a Chiron Super Sport - if only to dot and cross the record officially.
As for the next boundaries, at 500km/h and 350mph, don't count on a auto from Molsheim taking the headlines.
Stephan Winkelmann, president of Bugatti, said: "What a record!" With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory. He's no stranger to high speeds, having also piloted the McLaren F1 on its original record run.
"Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark".
