Bronx doctor: Vaping and cigarettes are equally unsafe

Considering Ban On Flavored Vaping Products, Says Donald Trump The Trump administration plans to ban flavored e-cigs to curb teen vaping
Anna Jefferson | 13 September, 2019, 17:01

The surprise White House announcement could shake up the multibillion-dollar vaping industry, which has been driven by sales of flavoured nicotine formulas. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the FDA will soon issue guidance on how to take flavored vaping products off the market, targeting products they believe are especially appealing to kids.

This had not only boosted the vaping industry but also dampened the traditional cigarettes as prolonged tobacco smoking could lead to lung cancer, breast cancer, emphysema and heart disease. "We can't allow people to get sick and we can't have our youth be so affected", he said.

The exact cause of the deaths and illnesses have not been determined, but most are initially believed to be related to vaping counterfeit marijuana products containing vitamin E oil, which is unsafe if inhaled.

"The last thing you want to do is make it more hard for smokers to quit smoking, and flavors do play a role for adults to quit smoking", Bakst said in an interview.

But parents, teachers and health advocates have increasingly called for a crackdown on flavours, arguing that they are overwhelmingly to blame for the explosion in underage vaping by United States teens, particularly with small, discrete devices.

"And unfortunately it's taken this crisis to finally prompt this action", he said.

Health officials in Canada aren't aware of any Canadians who are ill or who have died as a result of vaping but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

Preliminary data from the latest survey of youth tobacco use shows this trend is continuing: More than a quarter of high school kids used vapes in 2019, according to HHS.

Meanwhile, the FDA is finalizing instructions to remove all non-tobacco flavors of e-cigarettes within 30 days. Juul, one of the best known manufacturers, has grown into a huge business by selling mint, fruit and dessert flavored-nicotine products. "We will fully comply with the final FDA policy when effective".

Lately, researchers have been discovering that it's not only those who use vaping products themselves who are harmed - other people in the vicinity can be breathing in "secondhand" fumes, a phenomenon now dubbed "secondhand vaping".

Scott Gottlieb, who stepped down as FDA commissioner in April, said in a tweet that Juul bore particular responsibility for forcing the administration's hand.

In an accompanying FDA statement, it is suggested details of this potential ban will be revealed in the coming weeks. A ban on flavored e-cigarettes may not directly address the causes of that growing epidemic and may make it harder for adults to quit smoking tobacco.

Vapes changed the market when it first came out, but people didn't know too much about the e-cigarette phenomenon when it first hit the shelves.

During 2015-2017, almost 2,035 e-cigarettes have exploded or caused burns in the United States alone. The agency began policing cigarettes then, but it didn't add e-cigarettes to its portfolio until 2016.
