UK PM Boris Johnson suffers another Parliament blow over Brexit
04 September, 2019, 22:57
After a devastating defeat in Parliament, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to the House of Commons Wednesday to try to salvage his Brexit plans or force a general election next month. Among those bounced out were Stewart; Nicholas Soames, the grandson of Winston Churchill; and Kenneth Clarke, a former treasury chief and the longest-serving member of the House of Commons.
The House of Commons will only begin debating the legislation asking the European Union for an extension later Wednesday, and even if this passes, it will need to be approved by the House of Lords, Britain's upper parliamentary chamber, where members could delay its adoption by simply tabling a limitless number of amendments; no less than 90 amendments have already been registered in the Lords.
Aides have previously said that any poll would be held before a crucial European Union summit on October 17 and 18. "We want a general election, but we're not dancing to his tune", Labour Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said.
Johnson has demanded that Britain end three years of uncertainty over Brexit by leaving the E.U.by the Halloween deadline, even if that means a no-deal exit without agreements in place to regulate trade and other issues.
Mr Johnson realised that expelling such senior people from the party would split the Conservatives right down the middle, a split which can only get worse with time, since the rebels are likely to remain in Parliament until the next election.
The Johnson strategy is essentially to consolidate as much of the pro-Brexit half of the electorate as possible, and squeeze down the vote for MEP Nigel Farage's Brexit Party. From then on, Parliaments would last exactly five years, and terminating it a day sooner would require a two-thirds supermajority vote.
A Scottish court ruled in Johnson's favour in the parliament suspension case, saying Johnson's decision is lawful and not for judges to decide.

The leader of the SNP in Westminster, Ian Blackford, said the debate about an early election was only going ahead because the PM had lost the vote against the bill. But I just believe that they're not playing straight with us.
The defeat comes the day after MPs defied the government in a preparatory vote on the draft Brexit bill on Tuesday evening, including 21 of Johnson's own Conservative lawmakers - several of them distinguished former ministers. Opposition lawmakers, supported by rebels in Johnson's Conservative Party, planned to fast-track a law that would block a no-deal departure, amid cries from lawmakers that it would cause irreparable harm.
Conversely, the Labour leadership would be unwilling to install a Conservative or Liberal Democrat whose austerity policies in coalition in 2010-15 are blamed by the left for the miserable state of the economy and public services and therefore the protest vote for Brexit in 2016.
"There's a lot of MPs who are looking to see where the sense in British politics can come from, where we can really stop the chaos that is Brexit, and fight for a much better future for our country that people do not see under Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn".
