According to the report, Facebook is still waiting on regulatory approval from India before they can launch WhatsApp-based payments.

Indonesia, home to 260 million people and Southeast Asia's largest economy, is one of the top-five markets globally for WhatsApp, with over 100 million users.

In a bid to take advantage of Indonesia's rapidly growing e-commerce sector, WhatsApp, the messaging app of Facebook is reportedly seeking to collaborate with local digital payment firms to make their services available on the platform.

This could become a template for the cross-platform messaging platform to adopt in other emerging markets to get around the regulations on foreign companies creating their own digital wallets.

WhatsApp is in talks with several digital payments companies including Go-Jek, DANA, and OVO.

Despite a comparatively strict licensing regime for digital payment providers, Indonesia's ecommerce market is set to be worth $100 billion by 2025.

That's not all, WhatsApp is also in talks with Bank Mandiri, a state-owned financial institution that also runs a digital wallet.

WhatsApp is negotiating payments with financial partners in Indonesia, but there is not much information to share at this stage during the negotiations.

"As Mark has said earlier this year. we are looking to bring digital payments to more countries", a Facebook spokeswoman told Reuters.

The move would be the second such rollout from WhatsApp, after previously setting up payment services for users in India.

The launch of WhatsApp's mobile payment services is not expected until 2020, as WhatsApp would not want to launch in Indonesia before India, according to the sources. Interest in crypto is also high, with 10 percent of Indonesian respondents to the We Are Social report saying they owned crypto, which is more than double those in the US.
