On Friday afternoon, a Network Rail spokeswoman said: "There was a power surge on the national grid this evening which means we lost power to all our signalling over a wide area, including the Newport, Gloucester, Ashford, Bristol, Eastbourne, Hastings, Three Bridges and Exeter areas". National Grid has now informed Ofgem that the system has been restored.

Major power failures hit large areas of the United Kingdom on Friday, affecting trains, airports and traffic lights.

Transport for London said the Victoria line on the city's underground system had been suspended and warned people to take extra care when using the roads because some traffic lights were not working.

London, the south east and north west of England and Scotland were impacted, leaving hundreds of thousands of people temporarily without electricity.

Almost 1 million customers in London and other parts of England were left without power Friday when a failure hit two power generators on the National Grid, officials say.

National Grid said it would seek to "understand the lessons learned" from the incident, while energy regulator Ofgem called for an "urgent detailed report" on what went wrong.

London North Eastern Railway said all services were suspended in and out of King's Cross, one of London's busiest stations.

"This could include enforcement action". He said it was unclear whether the two near-simultaneous outages were connected or it was a coincidence.

"We will need to wait for National Grid's full technical investigation to get to bottom of that". The issue was "now resolved", she added.

Passengers at Newcastle Airport said the power cut out for about 15 minutes, but Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports said they had not been affected.

"All trains were stopped while our back-up signalling system started up".

The outage lasted for several hours, affecting around 300,000 customers in London and the southeast, and 500,000 in the Midlands, southwest England and Wales, according to regional power utilities. If that were the case there'd be reduction across many wind farms in [the] same area. Western Power Distribution said 90 percent of their affected customers had their power restored by 5:45 p.m., and work was continuing to restore power for everyone.
