Trump wants U.S. to buy Greenland

Does Donald Trump really want to buy Greenland from Denmark Trump Considering Buying World’s Biggest Island

Denmark now handles Greenland's foreign and security policy. Melting ice could uncover offshore oil resources. In 1867, the USA reached a deal with Russian Federation to purchase Alaska for $7.2m. The Wall Street Journal notes, "A decades-old defense treaty between Denmark and the USA gives the US military virtually unlimited rights in Greenland at America's northernmost base, Thule Air Base".

Donald Trump may have expressed an interest in acquiring Greenland for the United States, but Denmark is not interested in selling and Greenlanders mostly think it is a bad idea.

As Greenlanders were still asleep, Danish politicians from across the spectrum reacted with bewilderment, ridicule and outright anger over what they perceived to be a deeply inappropriate suggestion.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had been told by a guest at a dinner with associates that Denmark was struggling to pay the almost $600 million annual subsidy it gives the island, which is part of its kingdom.

There was no immediate official comment from either the White House or the Danish government but some officials in the Scandinavian country have poured scorn on the idea of selling Greenland.

One Twitter user wrote alongside a meme of Homer Simpson slowly retreating into a bush: 'BREAKING NEWS: Denmark to relocate Greenland in undisclosed location due to safety concerns'. After the end of the Cold War, its significance faded.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday the United States and Britain were "moving rapidly" towards a deal on trade. Greenland is also at the center of discussions on the globe's climate crisis. "Nothing is free. It is just how I was raised and I think a lot of people were not raised like that or they are not comfortable that they were raised like that maybe", said Rilee Collins of Maine. The person believed the president was interested in the idea because of the island's natural resources and because it would give him a legacy akin to former President Dwight Eisenhower 's admission of Alaska into the U.S.as a state.

"Greenlanders imagine themselves as independent people", said Rasmussen, cautioning that citizens' interest in obtaining a status "like Puerto Rico" was unlikely.

It's believed the U.S. first looked into purchasing the island back in 1867.

In 2014, Denmark staked a claim to roughly 900,000 square kilometres of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean based on its geological link to Greenland, according to a survey conducted by Danish authorities.
