Trump, who is scheduled to deliver public remarks later on Monday following the attacks, appeared to dismiss accusations following the two shootings in Texas and OH that his rhetoric has stoked racial hatred and provoked attacks amid a deepening political divide. "Likewise for those so seriously wounded", he tweeted.

On Saturday, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, killing 20 and injuring dozens of others. A white nationalist manifesto reportedly published online by the suspected shooter in El Paso called the attack a response to "the Hispanic invasion of Texas", mirroring language sometimes used by the President and others. "We can never forget them, and those many who came before them".

He added in his own particular style, which some may find inappropriate in this case: "We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!".

At the same time, Trump also blamed the news media for "the anger and rage that has built up over many years".

Trump on Monday appeared to blame the news media and what he considers unfair coverage for violence like the weekend shootings. The Democrat-controlled House approved legislation requiring background checks for all gun sales in February, but that bill has stalled in the Senate. "News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these awful problems will only get worse!"

Trump plans to address the shootings at 10:00 EST on Monday.

The shootings have also reverberated onto the campaign trail for next year's presidential election, as Democrats seeking to regain control of the White House and Senate focused their outrage on Trump.

Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran against Trump in the 2016 primaries, also pushed for new gun safety legislation, claiming that both Democrats and Republicans have failed in this regard.
