Trump proposes tighter gun control tied to immigration reform

The commander in chief called the back-to-back shootings in El Paso and Dayton, "domestic terrorism" and said he would ensure the Federal Bureau of Investigation has whatever it needs to prevent further attacks.

"This is the most racist President we've had since perhaps Andrew Johnson, in another age and another century, and he is responsible for the hatred and the violence that we're seeing right now", O'Rourke said in an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo on "Cuomo Prime Time".

Trump, back at the White House after remaining largely out of view for two days at his New Jersey golf club, declared the shootings in Texas and OH barbaric crimes "against all humanity" and called for unity to respond to an epidemic of gun violence.

During his address to the nation, Trump denounced both incidents, saying "hate has no place in our nation".

U.S. authorities said on Sunday that they are treating their investigation into El Paso massacre that left at least 20 people dead as "domestic terrorism" and a "hate crime".

Missing during his remarks was a recommendation that Congress take action on background checks or linking gun legislation to immigration reform, as he said in tweets earlier Monday morning. His reelection strategy has placed racial animus at the forefront in an effort that his aides say is created to activate his base of conservative voters, an approach not seen by an American president in the modern era.

Other candidates also sounded similar sentiments to Warren, including Mayor Pete Buttigieg , Sen. Stop your hatred, divisiveness and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

"We have to get it stopped". Trump's Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, speaking on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, rejected claims from Democratic candidates and others that the president's harsh rhetoric on immigration played any role in the shootings.

On gun control, a majority of Americans have consistently said they support stronger laws, but proposals have stalled repeatedly in Congress, a marked contrast to some countries that have acted swiftly after a mass shooting.

The 58-year-old continued, "Such language isn't new - it's been at the root of most human tragedy throughout history, here in America and around the world", Obama wrote.

Additionally, Trump directed the Department of Justice to seek and prioritize the enforcement of the death penalty in cases of hate crimes and mass shootings.

Trump himself has backed away from previous pledges to strengthen gun laws.

But Trump has resisted calls to toughen other gun control laws.

Instead he harked back to measures already taken.
