"This vile rhetoric puts our police in danger", McSwain said, adding that Krasner "routinely calls police and prosecutors corrupt and racist".

McSwain became the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania after being nominated by President Donald Trump in 2018.

McSwain has previously questioned Krasner's commitment to crime victims.

An email seeking comment was sent to Krasner.

All the wounded officers were in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, with television images showing several of them leaving hospital on Wednesday night, one with a bandaged head and arm.

UPDATE: Suspect is in custody. The alleged gunman surrendered shortly after midnight. Hill was also live-streaming the shooting on Facebook. Many, including, Philadelphia's Mayor Jim Kenny have called for new gun control measures. He was placed into custody.

The gunman fired intermittently at police - sometimes shooting out of a window - during the standoff, Ross said.

Shots were still being fired hours later, and officers returned fire. He called it "brilliant policing and maybe a little bit of a miracle".

By the time he surrendered, six cops were injured. "These are more than enough charges so that Mr. Maurice Hill may never exit jail".

The police commissioner credited local attorney Shaka Johnson with helping authorities bring the standoff to an end. One later escaped, but Ross said police feared a hostage situation could develop.

Hill told Johnson he wanted to make it out alive to see his newborn daughter and teenage son again. Another officer was wounded in a vehicle crash, along with a pedestrian.

Ross tells the news site that he appreciated the attorney's help, but it was ultimately the tear gas that ended the ordeal.

The suspect was identified by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner as Maurice Hill, 36. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. They were there for hours until a SWAT team evacuated them, but, he said, the gunman remained inside with no intention of surrendering.

But Titus said there's an increasing perception among police officers that people are emboldened to "not give themselves up" and possibly turn routine interactions with the police into violence.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that two officers are trapped in the house with the gunman. It "could have been far worse", he said Thursday.

Police have not yet released the suspect's name. It's unclear where the other officers were shot.

The criminal history of a man suspected of barricading himself inside a Philadelphia rowhome should have prevented him from legally owning the firepower he used Wednesday to wound six police officers in a standoff that carried deep into the night, authorities said.

Just around 6:30 p.m. ET more gunfire could be heard at the scene.

Gov. Wolf also praised the officers' bravery and said he was pleased that the injured are out of the hospital. That's how two officers and three others got trapped in the house.

Parent Kenny Williams told the station his children had been at a nearby day care when the gunfire began.
