Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has completed a three-week course of radiation therapy over the past month after a malignant tumor was found on her pancreas, according to a statement released Friday. The issue was discovered in July, NPR reports, and a biopsy "confirmed a localized malignant tumor".
Ginsburg underwent treatment beginning on August 5 at Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in New York City. A bile-duct stent was put in place. The court said that no further treatment is needed, but that the justice, 86, will have blood tests and scans periodically. Ginsburg was absent from the court in January as she recovered from surgery and missed six days on which the court heard a total of 11 arguments.
Pancreatic cancer is particularly risky, but Ginsburg in an interview with NPR in July made light of predictions about her fate at the time.
Ginsburg's health has always been an issue.
The statement did not say if the new tumor is a recurrence of the pancreatic cancer Ginsburg was diagnosed with in 2009, or a new cancer that arose.
But this is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose workout routines are the stuff of legends and who, it was reported, continued to work on her caseload from her hospital bed last winter, so she does not appeared to have much slowed down.
