RCMP find item that may be connected to McLeod and Schmegelsky investigation

McLeod and Schmegelsky were facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Leonard Dyck, a university lecturer from Vancouver who was found dead along a highway pullout south of Dease Lake, B.C., on July 19. Perhaps investigators recovered fingerprints, DNA or firearms evidence that links the crime scenes.

"The proper public response would have been a genuine apology", she said.

"Our investigators are committed to determining as much of that as possible, and we're hopeful that looking at everything now. respecting we may never have a full understanding with regards to motive".

Hackett said it "would be extremely hard us for us to ascertain definitively what the motive was" in the killings.

Hackett said the pair likely chose the route across Canada - equal to the distance between London, UK and Moscow - to avoid people and maintain their freedom as long as possible.

Police had said on Tuesday (local time) they were investigating all possibilities including that the suspects might have drowned. A search of the river turned up little of interest, police said.

The bodies were found in an area of "dense brush" about a kilometre from where some items directly linked to the suspects had been previously found and eight kilometres from where a burned-out SUV connected to the pair had been found on July 22.

The RCMP also revealed officers located a "damaged aluminium boat" on the shores of the river during a helicopter search on Friday.

Mounties have announced they've found human remains they believe are those of two murder suspects being sought in northern Manitoba.

"When someone in your family dies, I know that f***ing pain", Schmegelsky tells Abo in an exclusive sneak peek.

The Port Alberni childhood friends are also suspects in the killings of American Chynna Deese and Australian Lucas Fowler.

The bodies of tourists Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler, left, were found near Liard Hot Springs, B.C., on July 15.

"To know his lovely girlfriend, Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina also lost her life in this violent event is too cruel".

McLeod and Schmelegsky, who told their parents they were driving to Yukon to find work, came to the attention of the RCMP when their pickup truck was found burning 2km from Mr Dyck's body. A house-to-house search was undertaken before forces moved to nearby York Factory last Sunday after an unconfirmed sighting of two men scavenging in the town dump.

The sighting led to a community lockdown and heavy search.

The RCMP sent in dive teams on the weekend to scan the river and searchers went into the thick scrub around the area.

Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said, "I'm confident that it is them". It's a huge area we're looking at.

In a video posted by 60 Minutes, Alan Schmegelsky said while he needs to see evidence before he will believe his son, Bryer Schmegelsky, was a murderer, he sympathizes with the victims' families.

The breakthrough ends a tense three-week pursuit stretching 3000km across northern Canada.
