L.A. County's unemployment rate held steady at 4.5% in July for the third month in a row, despite a huge seasonal drop in jobs in the education sector as summer break kicked in.

The state announced on Thursday that Minnesota's unemployment rate for July was slightly higher at 3.4 percent.

Although the unemployment rate in the country is still staggering, the government claims to have created a lot of jobs.

Total Employment in agricultural, payroll and self-employed workers had a gain of 1,371 jobs in July.

The U.S. seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment added 164,000 jobs in July, improving 0.1%. Job losses were concentrated in retail trade and leisure and hospitality industries. Most of the 700 job losses in Government are within local school districts and are typically rehired once the start of the school year.

"Even with this slight increase, Minnesota's unemployment rate remains low and the labor force participation rate remains high", Steve Grove, the head of the state jobs agency, said in a statement. Both figures are well below the nation's full-year job growth rate of 1.5%. Financial services and the information sector lost the largest numbers of jobs, at 400 and 300, respectively.

He said the remaining 5.36 million are not working because of schooling, incapacitation, domestic activities or unemployment.

The state's five urban areas all showed job gains, with the biggest jump happening in St. Cloud, which had 1.5% growth. Preliminary estimates had indicated an over-the-month increase of 10,200 jobs.
