Her bedroom window at the secluded resort on the edge of rainforest was ajar when her parents went to check on her, the BBC reported.

Sniffer dogs were called in to try and find the teenager, who has learning difficulties, with so success.

The Lucie Blackman Trust, which helps British nationals in crisis overseas, said the family was assisting police.

The schoolgirl was visiting a resort in the town of Serembam, around an hour south of capital Kuala Lumpur with her parents and two siblings on a two-week trip of a lifetime. "Her family are with police now".

Ms Morrison described the disappearance, which was discovered at about 06:30 local time, as "completely out of character" and said her parents were "frantic".

Quoirin's aunt Aisling Agnew said as a child born with special needs and learning and development disabilities, it makes Quoirin especially vulnerable.

"However the family found one of the children named Nora Anne missing from her room at 8.30am the following morning", he said, after a missing persons report was lodged by the family.

"We now consider this a criminal matter".
