Iran's top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif received an invitation to the White House last month as tensions between Tehran and Washington reached a fever pitch, The New Yorker reported, citing American and Iranian sources, as well as a "well-informed" diplomat. His administration is trying to decide whether to risk stoking global tensions even more by ending one of the last remaining components of the 2015 nuclear deal.

"This appears to be a move by hardliners like Bolton and Pompeo to ensure that there is no bridge to a Trump meeting with Iranian leaders", Charles Freeman, an American diplomat and former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's active and effective diplomacy is unsanctionable, and neither Trump nor any of his allies could prevent the audible voice and the rightfulness of Iran from reaching the world", Shamkhani wrote in an article on Sunday, in response to the USA government's blacklisting of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The offer was extended by Senator Rand Paul with permission from the president.

Iran has repeatedly said it will reduce its commitment to the nuclear accord in stages and may even withdrew from the pact altogether unless the remaining signatories find ways to shield its economy from US sanctions.

According to The New Yorker, Zarif said it was up to Tehran to decide on accepting a meeting with Trump. "And of course all of our actions have been within the framework of the JCPOA".

The administration of US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday.

"The third step in reducing commitments to [the nuclear deal] will be implemented in the current situation", Zarif told ICANA, an official Iranian news agency. Trump considered military retaliation, but called it off at the last minute, because of projected casualties, according to the USA magazine.

The Supreme National Security Council Secretary, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' Rear Admiral, Ali Shamkhani said in a note, "Sanctioning the Iranian Foreign Minister after he rejected Trump's invitation for talks showed that the train of maximum pressure has been stopped in the failure station and all those aboard have no other choice than switch the railroad to the direction of implementing commitments and respecting legal rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran".
