The court said that doctors detected the abnormality during a routine blood test early in July and then a biopsy at the end of July at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY confirmed "a localized malignant tumor".

The 86-year old justice, who has had previous cancer scares, tolerated the therapy well and no further treatment is required, spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said in a statement. The court said Ginsburg does not need any additional treatment but will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans.

Ginsburg canceled her annual summer visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico, but has been active otherwise.

The US Supreme Court said the tumour was "treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body".

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg received radiation treatment for pancreatic cancer this month, the court said in a press release. She underwent a procedure to remove malignant nodules from her left lung on December 21st of previous year. The oldest Supreme Court justice, Ginsburg leads the liberal wing on the court which is now outnumbered 5-4 by conservatives. "No further treatment is needed at this time". The treatment included the insertion of a stent in Ginsburg's bile duct, according to a statement issued by the court. The justice underwent cancer surgeries in 1999 and 2009 and broke her ribs in at least two separate occasions.

Ginsburg is perhaps the most prominent of the four liberal justices on the Supreme Court.

During the second term of Democratic President Barack Obama, Ginsburg rebuffed calls from some liberals that she resign to allow the president to appoint a replacement, thereby avoiding the possibility of a Republican filling her seat.

The recovery period left the justice missing arguments for her first time on the court. She tried to ease people's worries about her health in an interview with NPR published last month.

"I'm now 85", she said in August, according to CNN.
