Biden's focus on connecting Trump's rhetoric to racial violence came the same day the president visited El Paso, where 22 people died in a mass shooting that the gunman said was motivated by a desire to kill Mexicans, and Dayton, Ohio, where nine people died hours later in an unrelated attack. "I thought the speech was going to be about agriculture, but he spoke about the way it is". The church was the site of a 2015 attack by a 21-year-old white supremacist who shot dead nine people at a Bible study meeting.

"In both clear language and in code, this president has fanned the flames of white supremacy in this nation", Biden said in a blistering speech in Burlington, Iowa.

Biden's remarks came the same day that President Trump was visiting the two cities where the shootings happened to meet with first responders, law enforcement, and some of the wounded and the victims' families.

Trump derided Biden's remarks on Twitter as "sooo boring!"

The weekend's back-to-back mass shootings intensified criticism of what many say is incendiary rhetoric by Trump. They can move markets.

"I'm open to them right now as a candidate-absolutely has to be part of the conversation", O'Rourke said in a podcast interview, reported The Federalist. "Stand up for what, at our best, this nation believes". "We are nearly 330 million Americans who have to do what our president can't".

One of his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, US Senator Cory Booker, was planning to give his own speech on white nationalism and gun violence at the historically black SC church where white supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people in 2015.

At an event in Washington, D.C., earlier Wednesday, another 2020 Democratic candidate, Montana Gov. Steve Bullock said of the president: "His hateful rhetoric about immigrants, communities of color, Muslims, and other minorities gives a permission structure for hate".

"How far is it from the white supremacists and Neo-Nazis in Charlottesville - Trump " s "very fine people" - chanting "You will not replace us" - to the shooter at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh saying Jews "were committing genocide to his people?' Not far at all", he said. He also implicitly criticized Mr. Trump for repeatedly referring to an "invasion" of immigrants and for his recent description of the majority-black city of Baltimore as "rat- and rodent-infested".

In Trump, Biden was due to say, "we have a president who has aligned himself in the darkest forces in the nation".
