Huawei has unveiled its own operating system for smartphones that it says can replace Android if U.S. sanctions on the Chinese tech giant cut off access to the Google system.
"Harmony OS is completely different from Android and iOS", said Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group referring to operating systems developed by Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google and Apple Inc (AAPL.O).
Huawei has been caught in the middle of the US-China trade disagreements, with the US restricting the company from accessing its market and incorporating American technology into its products, like Android. Yu said, "They (apps) will all be able to run on our OS in the future,". CNET reports that Huawei will first use the HarmonyOS for smart TVs and other "smart screen" devices.

Huawei's CEO reiterated the company's commitment to Google's Android platform and their wish to continue using it internationally. For now, it's mainly meant to run on devices other than smartphones. The company later revealed that it had been working on an Android replacement for years as it expected interference from the United States government. For now, HarmonyOS will remain on standby as the company's backup mobile OS for when it loses Android.
Huawei had previously given little information about the software, fueling speculation about how quickly or effectively it could find an alternative to the Android system.
It's unclear how that worldwide version shipping with Android squares with the current ban in place that's preventing Google from pushing out Android updates and security patches to Huawei.
However, that optimism was dented by the Bloomberg report, which has reinforced concerns the deterioration in U.S. American technology companies that hoped to soon resume their sales to Huawei might have to wait a little longer.
