The announcement comes as Huawei defends itself from the United States government's trade war on China, with United States president Donald Trump delaying bans on contracts for the embattled telecoms company.

Based on a statement by AndroidAuthority.com, Huawei is now developing their own "Google Maps replacement" called the Map Kit.

Map Kit is the latest product Huawei is building which will serve as Google Maps alternative. Zhang Pingan, president of cloud services at Huawei's consumer business group, told China Daily that among the features map kit will offer are real-time traffic conditions and "a highly sophisticated navigation system" that can spot a vehicle changing lanes, as well as support for augmented reality mapping. This includes Yandex, a Russian worldwide company that focusses in Internet-related products and services and Booking Holdings, an American company behind Booking.com and other fare aggregator sites. Map Kit is a service which isn't aimed for consumers but is instead a way for Huawei's app developer partners to build mapping experiences for their shared customers. It will use the telecom base stations in over 160 countries and regions. It will offer real-time traffic conditions and a highly sophisticated navigation system which can recognize a vehicle changing lanes. Huawei recently announced Harmony OS, its own in-house operating system. Huawei plans to invest $1 billion to encourage software developers to design apps for HarmonyOS.

However, the extension is set to expire next week, leaving the Chinese firm without the Android license.

However, the company has reiterated that it wants to keep working with Google.
