President Jair Bolsonaro is dismissing the importance of Germany's funding of sustainability projects in Brazil's forests, as the European nation weighs withdrawing from the region.

The far-right leader offered this idea in response to a journalist's question as to whether it was possible to simultaneously spur economic growth, feed the world's hungry and also preserve the environment.

Instead, they believe it should only be seen as indicative data to help enforcement teams target operations against illegal logging and burning in an area three times the size of Western Europe.

"Brazilian government policies in the Amazon raise doubts about continued, sustained declines in the rate of deforestation", German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze told the television news show Tagesspiegel.

Germany nonetheless plans to continue supporting the Amazon Fund, a forest preservation initiative created in 2008.

In response, Bolsonaro said that his country doesn't need Germany's €35 million that had been earmarked for forest conservation and biodiversity.

Norway, which has contributed the most to the fund, has threatened to withdraw, and said a year ago that payments to Brazil would be cut in half and might be eliminated altogether.

Deforestation in the Amazon in July of this year experienced a 278 percent increase over the same month last year.

The ultra-conservative Bolsonaro has been accused of favoring the country's mining and agricultural interests over the environmental impact of deforestation.
