A child care centre in Pennsylvania where children could stay overnight as their parents worked has been ravaged by a fire that killed five and sent the owner to the hospital, United States authorities said.

Erie Bureau of Fire Inspector Mark Polanski helps investigate a fatal fire at 1248 West 11th St.in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019.

The fire, reported at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, was funneling out of every first-floor window when firefighters arrived, Widomski said.

The Lawrence Park Fire Department said on its Facebook page Sunday that it would be launching a donation campaign to support Jones.

The children haven't been formally identified, but the Erie Fire Department says the dead range in age from 8 months to 7 years.

Two teenagers who were also at the daycare managed to escape the fire by jumping off the building's roof.

Santone told the New York Times that one of the victims was Harris's child and the other four were siblings, possibly left overnight by parents who worked night shifts.

Lawrence Park Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joe Crotty called it "unthinkable", telling NBC, "It's really beyond comprehension".

She said the family had two boys and two girls and had used the day care for nearly a year.

Santone said fire investigators only found one smoke detector in the attic of the home.

Still, the day care received a full fire inspection on December 28, 2018, and was found to be in compliance.

Erie Fire Chief Guy Santone told WICU-TV that the blaze may have been caused by an electrical overload.

Both issues were said to have been marked as being corrected after the inspection.

The woman was flown to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for treatment, authorities said.

Chief fire inspector John Widomski told the newspaper that the fire appeared to have started in the living room area on the first floor.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Erie police Detective Sgt. Michael Hertel at 814-870-1260 or Detective David Walker at 814-870-1122.
