A tweet claiming that EasyJet had introduced "backless seats" in its flights went viral on Tuesday, garnering 3.9K retweets and 5K likes and propelling the airline's name to the top of Twitter trending.

An EasyJet passenger has posted a picture of a row of backless seats on his flight from Luton to Geneva.

An easyJet spokesman told Sun Online Travel the woman moved before the plane took off adding: "No passengers were permitted to sit in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting fix".

Social media users have expressed outrage over the incident and described the it as "absurd" and "illegal".

Twitter user Matthew Harris uploaded the picture and asked 'How can this be allowed?'

The passenger who shared the image, Matthew Harris, said his partner was flying from Luton Airport to Geneva on flight EXY98HD when they spotted the seating. "The lady was moved to a spare seat once the flight was fully boarded".

Their official Twitter account responded nearly immediately, but not to check about the seat or to apologise, but to ask Matthew to remove the photo. In the end, no matter what, the plane would have taken off with that backless seat empty.

This means a seat without a back would not be permitted for a passenger to use in-flight.

Specifications of plane seats vary depending on airline and what class they are in, but standard seats are usually between 17 and 18ins wide, 33ins high and around 31ins apart per row.

It also prompted questions over whether the passenger pictured would have sat there during take-off and landing.

He added: "One has to wonder how safe the rest of the plane was. If folk were sitting in them for the whole flight, heads will surely roll?"

Asad Moghal, a digital and content manager at Byfield Consultancy said, "While it can be hard to deal with complaints online, and the goal is always to move the conversation offline, Easyjet's response isn't great".

"No passengers were permitted to sit in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting fix", EasyJet spokeswoman Katie Kershaw told Business Insider in a statement. "Safety is our highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all safety guidelines", said the easyJet statement.
