The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uncovered on Friday that it is helping local health authorities examine nearly 100 lung damage cases perhaps connected to the use of vaping products involving liquid nicotine and THC solutions.

The DSHS says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 94 cases of severe lung disease associated with vaping in 14 states dating back to late June.

HEALTH OFFICIALS in the USA have linked vaping to cases of lung disease, with some people hospitalised with a range of symptoms for "several weeks".

It also provided consultation to the Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and California departments of health about the lung diseases linked to vaping, especially among teens and young adults. Of those cases, 30 occurred in Wisconsin.

Patients typically complain of respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue before visiting a hospital.

In a statement, Howard Zucker, health commissioner for ny state, said "these latest reports of pulmonary disease in people using vaping products in ny and other states are proof that more study is needed on the long-term health effects of these products". Some are said to have used tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products.

CDC spokeswomen Kathy Harben said there is no evidence that this condition stems from an infectious disease.

The only factor the patients seem to have in common is a history of vaping.

In an email Friday, the CDC urged doctors to collect information and samples of what similar patients might have been vaping.

According to a press release issued Monday, five patients in Utah were hospitalized with serious breathing problems.

Other states, including NY and New Jersey, have also issued health advisories regarding vaping-linked lung illnesses. All patients were hospitalized, with some needing assistance to breathe. Nicotine found in most vaping products can harm development the adolescent brain, the CDC said, impacting areas that control attention, learning, mood and impulse control. "We also must ensure illegal products, such as counterfeit, copycat, and those that deliver controlled substances, stay out of the market and away from youth", the spokesperson said.

This isn't the first probe into illnesses related to e-cigarettes, however.

It is going to take collaboration among the medical community to learn more about the health consequences of e-cigarettes and vaping products, said Emily Chapman, chief medical officer at Children's Minnesota. To "vape" people use e-cigarettes to super-heat a solution called e-liquid, which they inhale as they might a tobacco cigarette. A number of counterfeit and adulterated products have also hit the market, which may have other additives or ingredients.
