Cuthbert added that he had been living in Sydney for the past three years, and said he did not hesitate to chase the man because he sees Australia as his "new home".

Seven Network cameraman Paul Walker - who filmed the 21-year-old man being detained - said the man was "full of blood".

He said he was known to police but "his history was unremarkable compared to the gravity of the crimes he committed".

Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says the attack "is not now classed as a terrorist incident" and that the man "has no links to terrorism".

Commuters were left stranded on Tuesday afternoon after a crazed knifeman in the Sydney CBD sparked a massive police operation. "They were fearless and I can only use that word seriously", he told reporters.

The man has been taken to Day Street Police Station.

New South Wales state police said in a statement that the man was caught and the woman was in stable condition.

Sydney police subsequently asked people to avoid the area and said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks.

"I don't know whether it's an instinct thing but we just thought we've got to restrain this guy from doing any more", he said.

Road rage horror: Woman left crushed between two cars outside Buckingham Palace
In the video, a couple of men are seen grabbing their hair in shock while the poor woman is helpless between the 2 cars. Tourist Deepak Anand, 40, from Vancouver, Canada, was on a bus with his wife and son and witnessed the incident.

Cuthbert said Luke, with the help of another man, "managed to get him down on to the floor and pin him down" with chairs and a plastic crate before police arrived.

"The male offender produced a knife and has stabbed a member of the public, and subsequently there were a number of attempted stabbings", police told The Australian.

"As I'm thinking about doing something the guy jumps on the front of the auto". "We will allege the offender has attempted to stab multiple people, luckily unsuccessfully", Superintendent Gavin Wood said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Jack Huddo, who purportedly witnessed the incident, wrote on Twitter: "A random dude just started stabbing people in the city right outside where we were having lunch".

Fuller said that information did not specifically relate to Islamic extremism - it also referenced recent terrorist attacks in North America and New Zealand.

That's when a bystander holding a chair chased the suspect into an intersection, where Ney began yelling, "Shoot me!" The attacker is now in police custody following the courageous actions of those who were present at the scene and were able to ... restrain him.

It appears the man in question has been arrested.

Walker said the man with the chair, whom he identified as a bank worker, had used the chair "like a lion tamer", trying to turn the man around as he ran through the city streets. "I saw people running so I ran towards him with a few other guys", a man wrote on Twitter.
