A passenger jet pilot has been lauded after he managed make an emergency landing when both engines malfunctioned.

An Airbus A321 plane with 234 people on board including crew members, had to land on its belly in a field near Moscow Region's Zhukovsky, on Thursday.

The plane was significantly damaged and would not perform flights in the near future, Ural Airlines said in a statement.

After take-off, the A321 sustained numerous bird strikes to its engines which quit and the landing was made near the village of Rybaki, which is 5 km from the runway at Moscow-Zhukovsky Airport.

Yusupov was hailed as a hero after the feat, and Russian television stations showed passengers standing in head-high corn next to the plane, hugging Yusupov and thanking him for saving their lives.

The experienced captain, 41-year-old Damir Yusupov, said when one of the plane's engines shut down after the bird strike upon taking off from Moscow's Zhukovsky Airport that he had hoped to circle the airport and land normally.

The Kremlin has confirmed it will bestow state awards on two pilots after they avoided catastrophe by performing an emergency landing in a corn field outside Moscow. There was silence in the cabin and then screams began when it touched down, footage showed.

"We were not warned", said Babin. In another five seconds the lights on the right side of the plane started flashing and we felt the smell of smoke. According to the latest data, 23 persons out of 226 passengers were injured and hospitalised. Smaller birds are usually chopped up by a plane engine's turbine fan blades, but plane engines aren't created to withstand strikes from multiple birds or larger birds.

City authorities insisted there were no dumps near the airport, saying the nearest landfill was 14 kilometres (nine miles) away.

Safety concerns have plagued Russia's airline industry since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, though standards are widely recognised to have sharply risen on worldwide routes in particular in recent years.
