Theresa May faces a full-blown diplomatic standoff with the United States after Donald Trump condemned Britain's "stupid" ambassador to Washington over leaked memos critical of the White House, as Downing Street insisted Sir Kim Darroch had its full support.
Hunt, who is vying with his predecessor Boris Johnson to replace May in Downing Street later this month, added that he would keep U.S. ambassador Kim Darroch in place if he took office.

Sir Kim had calledPresident Trump "inept" and "incompetent" in 2017 communications leaked on Saturday, with the President responding that the diplomat had "not well served" the UK. "The selective extracts leaked do not reflect the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship". But why confirm that Darroch's communications were disparaging of Trump?
In a scathing assessment of the White House, he said: "We don't really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept".
Trump's missives on Tuesday morning followed attacks on Darroch on Monday night. Read those leaked diplomatic telegrams (and the ones that weren't leaked).
Ironically, Darroch had predicted as much in one of a flurry of dispatches dating back two years that were handed to the "Mail on Sunday" by an unknown leaker.
He added: "Your diplomats give their private opinions to @SecPompeo and so do ours!"
"I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the USA we will no longer deal with him". "This a problem with the ethics of the individual who carried out this particular leak." . They say he will have to be moved quickly with another diplomat slotted in to make sure no lasting damage is done to British-American relations.
Boris Johnson, the former London mayor and favourite to enter Downing Street as the next prime minister, said Britain's relationship with the United States was incredibly important. The current front runner is former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, himself no danger to high-profile diplomatic gaffes.
Asked in a television debate whether Darroch would retain his job under a Johnson government, he said he would not be so presumptuous as to think he would be in a position to take that decision.

"The UK has a special and enduring relationship with the U.S. based on our long history and commitment to shared values and that will continue to be the case", he said.
But there are still concerns in the corridors of power in London about the possible fallout from the cables amid fears that what has been published so far is a small amount of what was leaked.
