President Trump says he will nominate lawyer Eugene Scalia to be his new Labor secretary.

Scalia is a partner of a law firm Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher in the Washignton DC office.

After graduating the University of Chicago Law School, Scalia served as a special assistant to William P. Barr during his first stint as US attorney general (1990-1992, under George H.W. Bush).

Trump added: "He'll be a mountainous member of an Administration that has performed extra within the primary 2 ½ years than presumably any Administration in history!"

Scalia, 55, if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, would replace Alex Acosta.

The president made the announcement in a series of two tweets.

Acosta stepped down final Friday over his past involvement in a highly controversial 2008 plea deal for financier Jeffrey Epstein, who's now facing federal sex trafficking costs.

Democrats and union leaders strongly opposed Scalia's nomination, in large part because of his opposition to a Clinton administration regulation that would have protected workers from repetitive stress injuries, which became known as the ergonomics rule. Tom Cotton. The Arkansas Republican attended a White House meeting Thursday where Mr. Trump offered the post to Mr. Scalia, and he accepted.

Epstein is facing new charges in NY of sex trafficking.

Justice Scalia, a steadfast conservative on the nation's high court, died unexpectedly in 2016.

Mr. Scalia will require confirmation by the Senate, which is already dealing with a number of Trump administration vacancies.

As a lawyer, he has challenged tighter USA financial regulations, a rule that forced energy companies to disclose payments made to foreign governments, and an order that required more distance between orcas, or killer whales, and humans after the death of a marine life trainer at SeaWorld Entertainment Inc.
