A day after President Donald Trump led supporters into chanting "send her back", for the Somalia-born Democratic lawmaker Ilhan Omar, at a re-election rally in North Carolina, he has claimed he actually did not approve of it and tried to stop it.

The moment took an ugly turn at the rally when the crowd's "Send her back" shouts resounded for 13 seconds as Trump made no attempt to interrupt them.

It looks as though the people she represents in her home state of Minnesota feel roughly the same way as well.

Asked about the chants by the participants at Wednesday's North Carolina rally, Trump said: "Those are incredible people".

Three of the four Congresswomen were born in the U.S, and the fourth, Ilhan Omar, a Somalia-born refugee, is a naturalized American citizen, and all of them have been critical of the Trump administration's policies - not of the USA itself.

"I was not happy with it", Trump said to reporters Thursday.

All are American citizens, and all but Omar was born in the US She fled to America as a child with her family from violence-wracked Somalia.

"You can imagine if someone said that when I was speaking, what I would have said: No. Stop", Mr Biden said of the chant when talking to reporters after the breakfast. "If the Democrats want to embrace people that hate our country ... it's up to them".

Trump on Thursday sought to distance himself from supporters' chants of "send her back" at a rally where he blasted Omar, as his fellow Republicans anxious the sharp rhetoric might become a theme of his 2020 re-election campaign.

"You know what I'm unhappy with?" Meanwhile, in the United States itself, Omar was accorded a rousing reception by her supporters chanting "Welcome back" and "We love you" at the Minneapolis airport as she returned to her constituency accompanied by Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, with whom the Somali-American is crafting healthcare legislation.

US House votes to block 'emergency' arms sale to Saudi Arabia
It's unlikely supporters can muster the congressional super-majority that would be needed to override an anticipated Trump veto. The votes are also meant to punish Saudi Arabia over the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi .

Omar told the crowd: "We are going to continue to be a nightmare to this president".

Rep. Adam Kinzinger of IL tweeted that it was "ugly, wrong, & would send chills down the spines of our Founding Fathers".

Omar on Thursday had said Trump was "spewing fascist ideology". "This ugliness must end, or we risk our great union".

Facing a mounting backlash over the cries of "Send her back" aimed at congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Trump accused the media of a "sick partnership" with his Democratic opponents.

It was also the latest demonstration of how Trump's verbal cannonades are capable of dominating the news.

Responding to Trump's accusations, Omar tells Al Jazeera: "Those [9/11] are horrific attacks". Democrats had hoped the spotlight on Thursday would be on House passage of legislation to boost the minimum wage for the first time in a decade.

"Let me hear him say "I condemn them".

The lawmakers attending agreed that the chant was inappropriate and could prove a harmful distraction, and Pence concurred and said he'd discuss it with Trump, said another participant who described the conversation on condition of anonymity.

Trump has made defamatory comments accusing her of praising al-Qaeda, and saying that she downplayed the 9/11 terror attacks.
