Study finds consumption of sugary drinks linked with cancer risk

Sugar in fruit juice may raise risk of cancer, study finds Study: Drinking Sugary Drinks Can Increase Your Cancer Risk Up to 18%

The study couldn't prove cause and effect, but it found that drinking as little as 3 to 4 ounces of sugary drinks each day was tied to an 18% rise in overall risk for cancer. This follows a recent study linking sugary beverage consumption to greater risk of premature death.

However, until now it has been hard to tease out the extent to which sugary fruit juices and fizzy drinks also increase the risk of cancer per se.

Drinking large amounts of fruit juice may raise your risk of cancer, according to a big study which has found a link between the regular consumption of all kinds of sugary drinks and the likelihood of developing the disease.

Ninety-seven sugary drinks and 12 artificially sweetened beverages, including soda, sports drinks, energy drinks and 100 percent fruit juices with no added sugar, were tracked.

"High sugary drink consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain... obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer".

Another possibility is that additives, such as 4-methylimidazole, which is found in drinks that contain caramel coloring, could play a role in cancer formation. "It's just to balance this in our diets, and to drink less than one glass per day".

In a statement, the American Beverage Association said: "It's important for people to know that all beverages - either with sugar or without - are safe to consume as part of a balanced diet".

"That said, America's leading beverage companies are working together to support consumer' efforts to reduce the sugar they consume from our beverages by providing more choices with less sugar or zero sugar, smaller package sizes and clear calorie information right up front".

Herrera, who appeared with Lopez Obrador in the video, said that Mexico is a country of enormous resources but also great contrasts.

She added: "More research is needed to understand if there is a direct link between sugary drinks and cancer".

For every extra 100ml per day consumed on top of this, a person's cancer risk increased by 18% for all cancers and, among women, by 22% for breast cancer.

"For too long the nutri-myth of sweeteners being a health risk has remained in popular culture", she told the Science Media Centre in the UK.

Those people who drank the most sugary drinks, at 185.8ml per day on average, and then consumed an extra 100ml per day, had a 30pc increased risk of all cancers.

Those taking part had completed at least two 24-hour online validated dietary questionnaires, created to measure their usual intake of 3,300 food and beverage items, and were followed up for a maximum of nine years.

They say their research is further evidence that taxing sugary drinks is a good idea.

Just a small glass of juice or soda a day can reportedly increase a person's overall risk for cancer by almost 20 percent. The giant study tried to control for all kinds of health factors: The authors accounted for people's weights and heights, exercise and eating patterns, education, family cancer history, and other potentially confounding factors.

When the researchers did a follow-up with the participants, they identified 2,193 cancer cases and the average age of diagnosis was at 59 years old.
