Philippines may exit from UN Rights Council

Duterte 'seriously considering' ending Iceland ties over UN probe Iceland has ‘more killings in abortion’ than Philippines’ dead drug dealers – lawmaker says

Panelo said the resolution, approved by 18 countries, demonstrates how Western powers are "scornful" of the Philippines' sovereign exercise of protecting its people from the scourge of illegal drugs.

Locsin wrote on his Twitter account that the UNHRC vote was a "a small and harmless matter", and the Philippines is "not severing diplomatic relations with any country".

"They have more unborn babies that they have aborted or killed".

"(Duterte) is seriously considering cutting diplomatic relations with Iceland", Panelo said in a statement.

"The adopted Iceland resolution is grotesquely one-sided, outrageously narrow, and maliciously partisan".

President Rodrigo Duterte is facing cases before the International Criminal Court for alleged mass murders and human rights violations under the drug war, his signature initiative launched in 2016. "We wouldn't have come to this point if the government has been open about all these investigations", she added.

The Palace official even cited the high satisfaction rating of Duterte in recent public surveys.

Meanwhile, despite the administration's disgust over Iceland's UN-approved resolution - and after hinting that the Philippines might withdraw from the UNHRC, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. himself admitted that the temptation to abandon the United Nations is strong but maintained that the country will not leave the human rights body as it must "remain true to the cause of human rights".

"We reject this resolution because, through it, a minority has short-circuited and rendered inutile the time-honored mechanisms by which the United Nations maintains the accountability of member-states, such as the treaty body system and the UNHRC's Universal Periodic Review", he added. The police deny they execute suspects, and Duterte denies that the killings are state-sponsored and says the harsh measures are necessary to combat drug cartels. "It is through such mechanisms that the human rights concerns mentioned in the resolution should have been taken up, verified, and addressed", he added. Of the 47 member-states, 18 voted in favor of conducting an investigation into the Philippines' drug war.

But Medialdea dismissed the criticisms on the President's crackdown on illegal drugs, saying "the Philippines is entering a historical era in its governance that is anchored on the genuine protection of the right to human life, liberty and property".

"The resolution is very modest, focusing on impartiality and cooperation with the U.N.to get clarity around the contested facts", adding that "I sincerely hope that this will eventually prompt Philippine authorities to work with the U.N".

CHR commissioner Karen Dumpit on Monday said the UNHRC will not seek a report into the Philippines' anti-narcotics drive if the local police shared details of their campaign.
