Microsoft scraps channel changes following partner backlash

Microsoft Teams hits 13 million daily active users, potentially more than Slack Microsoft Teams now has over 13 million daily active users

Microsoft Teams might have exclusively been around for two years.

Ever since Microsoft added a free Teams option past year, more employers are beginning to use it, Microsoft said. When Slack last announced its DAU number in late January, the company had "more than 10 million" daily active users.

I suppose it's possible that Slack could have picked up three million users over the past five months although given its growth curve over the past several years, it seems unlikely. This marks the first time Microsoft has architected a solution at this scale, with partners and for partners. With availability in 53 languages across 181 markets, Teams is powering teamwork for customers around the world, including Emirates, FedEx, Lexmark, The Adecco Group, KONE, and McCann Worldgroup.

Announcements are now part of Microsoft Teams.

Recent reports, however, suggest that the Microsoft's sales teams is focusing on getting people to use Teams over the course of the next year, so we could see Microsoft pull even further. Also coming this month will be a "Read Receipts" feature in chat, letting a user know a message was read. There's a sneaky control for managers associated with this feature because they have an "option to geo-fence a location to ensure team members are at the designated worksite when clocking in or out". "It'll let team owners send a message to everyone having a specific role in an organization using the "@mention" messaging feature. Slack has not been quiet in adding new features either, but by comparison it has been left in the dust as Microsoft Teams continues to evolve.

A mere two days earlier, Schuster, in a prerecorded webcast, addressed Microsoft's planned partner investments that the company will focus on during next week's annual Inspire conference in Las Vegas.

At the heart of the issue was Microsoft's plans from 1 July 2020 to no longer provide free internal use association for product licenses for the channel, meaning they will now have to be purchased out of the partners' own pockets via a commercial arrangement. Indeed, partners are seeing increased interest in Teams. Additional new partner integrations include support for contact centers, compliance recording and cloud solution providers.
