NASA shock: Asteroid skims dangerously close to Earth but nobody noticed until very late

Duffy said astronomers have a nickname for the kind of space rock that just came so close to Earth: "city-killer asteroids". And another asteroid dubbed 2019 OK moved past our Earth yesterday at a "dangerously" close distance of 70,000 kilometres, barely missing from hitting our Earth. But in this case, the asteroid approached not from the dark of deep space, but from the Sun", an Astronomy report read."Just as baseball players have trouble spotting balls when the Sun is in their eyes, so too do telescopes have a harder time tracking small objects when they're closer to the Sun.
Duffy said astronomers consider this type of space rock to be "city-killer asteroids".
Moreover, had the asteroid managed to hit our Earth, it would have done so with over 30 times the energy that's generated by the Hiroshima Atomic Blast. The last space rock to strike Earth similar in size to Asteroid 2019 OK was more than a century ago, Brown said.
Astronomers had no idea the rock was heading towards our planet, due to the asteroid flying towards us from the direction of the sun.
Teams in the USA and Brazil discovered 2019 OK earlier in the week, but the information was released just before it flew by.
"It's impressively close. I don't think it's quite sunk in yet. It's a pretty big deal", he said.
'The lack of warning shows how quickly potentially unsafe asteroids can sneak up on us, ' Monash University astronomer Michael Brown wrote in an essay for The Conversation.
'As each orbit takes 2.7 years, it isn't always going to pass as close to Earth as it did this time. Almost 90 percent of the larger asteroids have been identified.
"If that were to hit the Earth, that would be bad". Earth itself is just over 7,900 miles in diameter.
Asteroid 2015 HM10, which is up to 360 feet wide, also flew by Earth.
Though Asteroid 2019 OK was in no danger of actually hitting Earth, experts say that with enough notice of an incoming asteroid, it may be possible to nudge the asteroid's orbit slightly, making it miss our planet.
The closest passing asteroid, NASA says, was 2019 OD. But these earlier images did help astronomers nail down the asteroid's orbit.
"Asteroid 2019 OK has a very elliptical orbit, taking it from the asteroid belt beyond Mars to within the orbits of both Earth and Venus".
In a separate comment to the Herald, Dr Brown said: "This is one of the closest approaches to Earth by an asteroid that we know of".

Other handsets-including iPhones back to the 6S, both previous-generation Pixels, and Galaxy S7 and newer-will fetch $200 to $350. The iPhone has always outperformed Android rivals when it comes to retaining value over time, and that's not a secret.
As an added bonus, Real-Time Eye AF will work in movie mode, as well, a feature we first saw on the recently-announced A7R IV . The pocketable travel camera has 357 phase-detect and 425 contrast-detect autofocus points that cover 68 percent of the frame.
In the study , C.auris was able to survive at higher temperatures than other, similar, fungi, suggesting it is evolving. Extremes of temperature are known to kill fungi and the heat required to destroy them varies across different strains.
