Manchester City's first signing ahead of the 2019/2020 season looks to be confirmed after the club paid Rodri's buy-out clause at Atletico Madrid.

Rodri, 23, had been under contract with the Atletico until 2023, with the release clause reported to be set at around £62.6m (€70m).

Rodri would become City's record signing with his fee eclipsing the £60m City paid Leicester for Algeria global Riyad Mahrez last summer.

City chiefs travelled to La Liga headquarters with Rodri's representatives to inform them that they meant to pay his release clause.

City boss, Pep Guardiola, has identified the 22-year-old as a long-term replacement for 34-year-old Fernandinho at the Etihad.

It is strongly believed that the €70million was handed over to them by his future club, Manchester City.

Atletico Madrid said representatives of the player and from the Premier League side had paid the required fees at the La Liga headquarters on Wednesday.

"In this way, the player has unilaterally terminated the employment contract that bound him to our club until June 30, 2023".

He made 47 appearances for the club last season as they finished runners-up to champions Barcelona and eight points clear of derby rivals Real Madrid, and eight more for his country.

He made his worldwide debut in a friendly against Germany past year and has made six senior global appearances.
